"I Can't Dance" Dance class starts on Feb. 8

This series is three weeks of one hour classes held on Sunday afternoon.  We will start on Feb. 8. Enjoy Super Bowl Sunday!

The classes are held in a private studio space. These  classes are intended for those who have danced very little but want to learn partner dancing.

Fee is $50 per person for the series. Please register ahead so we can keep the class size to 7 dancers or less.

Contact Shirley@comeoutdancing.com to inquire or register.

When you finish this series, you will have the confidence and the skills to move into any beginning dance class.

Note: You do not need to register with a partner. You will dance with everyone in the class.

During the first class we  will learn about frame and each student will practice both leading and following.

We will go thru  some exercises to take our minds away from our feet - leading and following with out touching and then using Argentine Tango exercises to practice weight changes with a partner.

We will use the merengue as our first dance to begin practicing lead and follow.

You will be introduced to merengue, hustle, waltz, and either country western two-step or swing. The class may choose another latin dance - often rumba - to get a bit more rhythm into the classes. I focus on your learning some basic steps that are useful in many dances.

This is a great way to prepare yourself for those group lessons you have fantasized about but never signed up for.

If you have questions, contact shirley@comeoutdancing.com to learn more.

Salsa for Beginners in Decatur

Note: this is the last Month for Salsa on Mondays with Shirley. I am joining a performance group which rehearses on Mondays. Join me if you like - you will learn four dances for this July performance.
I may add another salsa class to the week's schedule. Email me if interested in this.
Beginner's Salsa Lessons: Salsa Essentials
Drop ins pay $12 per class

We sometimes dance more than salsa, based on the desires of the class attendees but you will get all the basics and leave with a sense of loving the Latin beat.

Our Salsa Syllabus designed for students to quickly and successfully progress onto the next level.
No partner, or experience required.
We review the rhythm and the basic steps in the first 20 minutes so it is important not to miss that segment of the class.
The last 35 minutes  we learn a variety of basic patterns that work independently but can be combined easily with patterns from other classes.
You may start at any week but be sure if you are a real beginner that you try to get to the whole class.
We recommend that everyone come promptly at 7:00pm to warm up and learn and review all the basic steps. This is especially important for new dancers or for those of you who have missed several weeks.
Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to move immediately.  Wear clothing that allows your body to 'breathe'. You will be warm after a few minutes of dancing - no matter how cold the outside may be.
Many of us who did not grow up hearing this music can feel the energy of it but feel confounded when we try to move rhythmically to it. We will practice 'hearing' and moving to the rhythm of salsa.

We always appreciate and welcome some seasoned dancers during this lesson too. Because we change partners in the lesson - those with more skill can switch off leading and following to sharpen their skills, make the numbers even out and help everyone have more fun. Those of you who dance a lot know that new partners always teach you something.

After the basics - we are learning some technique, style and patterns for partner dancing. In the beginning class, we will learn some turns for both the lead and follow and the crossbody and peekaboo.

The studio has a wooden dance floor and a wall of mirrors - it makes dancing even more fun.

We can not accept credit cards, There is an ATM on the Square.

"Broken Hearts" Valentines Dance at the Studio in Decatur

"Broken Hearts" Valentines Dance at the Studio in Decatur

Friday, February 13 2009

Several Dancers Core Studios

Decatur, GA 30030

Valentines Day is a double edged kind of holiday: lovely in some ways; bittersweet in others.

I have always loved songs about "lost love", possibly starting with The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".

Sometimes these songs make me sad but mostly they just remind me of a person or place or time that I treasure.

So in my dance song collection, I have lots of songs about lost love - some offering insight, some just wallowing in memories.

Come dance with me to this great group of classics - as a way of acknowledging the darker side of Valentines Weekend.

There will be lots of dance partners - so come 'stag or drag' and have some fun - yes you can sing along.

We will have a waltz class at 8pm then the dance begins at 9pm. Come to both for $12.

If you RSVP ahead of time to shirley@comeoutdancing.com I will have a piece of chocolate there for you to savor.

with Bill Rutan and his Band
Admission: $8 at the door
@ Pine Lake Clubhouse, 300 Clubhouse Drive, Pine Lake GA 30072
Info: (404) 307-3044
For the Valentine's Dance in Pine Lake, Bill Rutan will be joined by fellow Hotlanta Dixieland members Don Erdman (clarinet & sax), L.A. Tuten (acoustic bass), and pianist Mick Kinney.

You've probably heard his music in,film scores, commercials,or upon entering Turner Field.Atlanta's finest traditional jazz banjoist,Bill Rutan, could rest on his credentials as an instrumentalist alone. He played on Bourbon Street in early 60's with Red Garter, also touring Europe and performing at the 1964 World Fair.
He has recorded New Orleans style with bands to numerous to list.Since settling down in Atlanta, his phone still rings with offers to entertain at jazz conventions,on cruises, and festivals overseas. Yet,something lesser known to  his many admirers, Bill Rutan is a living treasury of early  20th century song.An avid collector of sheet music, Rutan  does more than archive hundreds of these old chesnuts;he can  perform them in their full original versions. In a relaxed  tenor delivery reminicent of megaphone crooner Rudy Vallee  or Ukelele Ike(the voice of Jiminy Cricket),Bill draws  listeners into a bygone era with novelty numbers  like"Hard Hearted Hannah   the Vamp of Savannah",and topical tunes such  as"Brother can you spare a dime?".
While  nostalgic, their universal themes are surprisingly  relevant, and when, rendered by one so comfortable in the  genre as Rutan, the reaction is often one of shared  familiarity. Of course a great deal of material from the  20's and 30's remain standards today.
Just as Ray  Charles iconic version of"Georgia"was a revival of  Hoagy Carmichael from decades before, todays artists Harry  Connick,Natalie Cole, and Dianna Kroll continue to mine the  songcraft of pre world war two americana.
Then there's  Bill Rutan who has been there all along.
Bill Rutan and  his Band will be performing a special Valentines  Dance/Concert on Feb 14,8pm at the Pine Lake  Clubhouse;admission $8

From Don

I am sending this e-mail to all the hosts on my list for anyone that may be travelling to the Pink Jukebox Trophy by train.

On 21st February, trains to Crofton Park are departing from Victoria (not Blackfriars) at XX:12 and XX:42 minutes past the hour.  They do not call at Elephant and Castle.
The last train back to Victoria is at 23:18.
The Victoria line is running to Victoria but there will be no Circle Line that day and the District Line is suspended between Embankment and Whitchapel.  (In other words the District Line is OK to the west and will be stopping at Victoria but it does not go very far to the east.)
Good luck!
Best regards
Don.
